It’s all relative, my dear Watson

I’ve always found it hard to believe how among the multitude of great people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing over the years it is easy to break them down as :

1) Are leaders/visionaries in the work environment. Are needy/child like when it comes to their personal lives.

2) Are stalwarts in their relationships. Are shit at work.

3) Shit at both work and relationships.

It’s the first category that I’ve run into for most of my life. The pace, the efficiency, the leadership abilities, the work place camaraderie yada yada always makes me think how some people will be great in their personal relationships as well but that rarely seems to be the case. It’s like two different people altogether. Why, why but why ? It’s all relative, my dear watson. We all are tortured souls at some level.

It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it; but the young know they are wretched for they are full of the truthless ideal which have been instilled into them, and each time they come in contact with the real, they are bruised and wounded. ~ W. Somerset Maugham, ‘Of Human Bondage’, 1915
