i find your lack of music knowledge disturbing

A follow up to this post from 2013.

The narrator speaking off camera: Meet Sid, not 26 years of age anymore, residing in the United States of A and not following any musical genre – No Jazz, No Rap,No Pop, No Hip-Hop, No EDM, No Classical,No Rock, No Country..our protagonist is at a niche disadvantage.

Sid to empty water cooler:  “I get left out of music talk at work.”

Sid to primary care physician: “Do I have any musical hobbies ?  Hmm..I have a spotify subscription. But since I do not follow any artists or genres..my Discover weekly playlist is empty.”

WhatsApp conversations with similarly a challenged friend.

Sid: Tum koi bhi music genre ya artist ko follow karte?
rrp: So many bro.
Sid: Hum us department mein weak hain.
rrp: Naku peddaga picchi lekapotunde; female friend dedicated ga rap follow chestadi, ami toh cubicle sharing cheste, naku kuda antinchindi.
Sid: So…will you be going to a lot of concerts?
rrp: Ipudu ade trend le. Silent ga flow lo follow aipotunna.
Sid: Nenu kastam ga Big Lazy ani oka band follow avutha. Adi chalu ani fix ayya. Vadu naku convenient ga unnatu once every few years oka album release chestadu.
rrp: Rap racha hai. Manchi hype untadi song lo. A few weeks back Drake ki concert dekh ke flat hogaya. Apati nunchi koncham heavy ga listening.

Sid: There should be a club for people like us.
rrp : Speak for yourself. I’m a music person now.
Sid : Nannu soundproof chesav ga.

In the pizza chart that is my social life/friends scene, two slices are predominant. Doctors and Computer Programmers. Rarely is there any overlap between these groups; unless I’m hanging out with a Chief Medical Informatics Officer cadre person.

When I hangout with Doctors, it is usually in the company of other Doctors. The conversations always take a predictable turn. Interesting medical cases (ex: kounis syndrome), NEJM, Webmd bashing, Reimbursement blues, Cars, Golf, Wines, Tuscany, Sunshine Act, Million dollar mansions, Moving to Florida, Dr Pimple Popper’s Instagram feed. My contributions to these conversations are usually : (a) hmm…let me slyly google that medical condition they’re talking about. (b) What do you think about Bernie Sander’s Medicare for all call. (c) Can you take a look at this suspicious mole that’s been growing on my forearm? (d) More wine?

Some Doctor or the other is always joking about ‘if them telling me to cut salt intake’ can be billed as an outpatient clinic visit with facility code 12. This has happened to  me with Doctors all across the broad spectrum of Internal Medicine : ENT, GI, Cardio, Pulm, Anesthesia, Surgery, Geriatrics, Palliative !!

The only time I have the complete attention of the MD Collective is when I let some salacious piece of gossip slip.

These hangs usually end with everyone playing their favorite Ted Talk video on a projector usually in a private theater setup.

When I hangout with Computer Programmers  it is usually in the company of other Computer Programmers. The conversations always take a predictable turn. H1b, RFE, EB2, USCIS, Insurance, Desi politics, Office politics, Cricket, NFL, EPL, Tollywood gossip, Bollywood gossip, Instagram gossip, Deals Deals Deals, House down payments, Vegas trips, Cars, School districts, Taxes, Biryani, NRE/NRO Accounts, Nostalgia for motherland, Netflix recommendations, Amway, Jack Daniels, Robinhood / Wealthfront /401K, MAGA, TDS, Airline miles, Tv9, CNN, Ganja, GreatAndhra, YouTube comedy clips, Trivikram, Big Boss, Yupp TV, Temple timings, Video games, Schengen visa, Sai Baba.

What doesn’t come up ever? Computer Programming.

Work is a strict Don’t ask Don’t tell.

My contributions to these conversations is usually : (a) hmm…let me slyly google that NFL/Soccer/Cricket thing they’re talking about. (b) What do you think about Bernie Sander’s Medicare for all call. (c)More IPA ?

The only time I have the complete attention of the collective is when I let some salacious piece of knowledge drop. Like RFE reasons or how medical billing and insurance works.

These hangs usually end with everyone playing their favorite YouTube videos on a TV using a chromecast.
